FNC has considerable experience treating patients with all kinds of epilepsy, including intractable, hard to treat cases. We offer the full spectrum of diagnostic procedures and treatments for epileptic seizures and our treatment teams are skilled in the long-term management of the medical and social aspects of epilepsy.

Medical Treatment for Epilepsy
Medication to prevent epileptic seizures is the most common treatment approach for the disease. Medication controls seizures in half or more of patients for substantial periods of time, and physician can choose from a number of different anti-seizure medications depending on the patient's type of epilepsy other medical co morbidity. If seizures are not controlled after treatment with several different agents, doctors may consider medications available through clinical trials or interventional treatments such as Vagus Nerve Stimulator (VNS) or surgical treatment. About a third of epilepsy patients do not respond to medications.

Vagus Nerve Stimulation for Epilepsy
Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is a treatment in which doctors place a small pacemaker under the skin near the vagus nerve in the side of the neck. This device regulates electrical activity in the brain, and in many patients with poorly controlled epileptic seizures it can reduce their frequency and severity. Placement of the device does not involve surgery on the brain. Florida Neurological Center is among the most active and experienced with VNS treatment in our region.
